What is a live prayer app?

A live prayer app connects you with another person who prays with you out loud, in real time, usually over audio, rather than giving you a prayer to read or a list to keep. The distinction that defines the category is simple: someone else is actually there. Most apps filed under "prayer" are either content libraries of recorded devotionals or organisers for your own prayer lists. Neither puts a human on the other end.

This page explains how the category works, where iToro sits inside it, and where it does not belong at all. Reviewed August 27, 2026.

The three things "prayer app" can mean

Guided content libraries. Professionally produced audio: meditations, Scripture readings, sleep sessions, devotionals. You listen. Hallow and Glorify are the best known. These are excellent at what they do, and what they do is deliver content, not connection.

Prayer list organisers. Tools for remembering to pray: lists, reminders, categories, group feeds, answered-prayer tracking. Echo Prayer and PrayerMate are the established examples. The prayer itself still happens privately, in your own head.

Person-to-person prayer. Someone actually prays for you, and you receive it. This is the smallest of the three groups, and it splits again by whether the prayer is live, meaning you and the other person are present at the same time, or asynchronous, meaning they record it and you hear it when you are ready.

Live and asynchronous are both real, and you need both

Live prayer is unmatched when you need it now: the diagnosis, the phone call, the two in the morning you cannot sleep through. Someone prays with you while you are in it.

But live prayer has a hard constraint that no app can engineer away. It requires another human being to be awake, free, and willing at the same moment you are. Any product that promises instant live prayer every time is either overstating it or quietly queuing you.

Asynchronous voice prayer solves the other half. Someone records a prayer for you in their own voice. You hear it when you open the app, at three in the morning, on the drive to the hospital, or eleven times over a hard week. It is not a lesser substitute for live prayer. For people carrying something long, it is often the more useful of the two, because a recording can be returned to and a moment cannot.

How iToro works

On iToro, every prayer is a human voice. There is no text-only prayer to send or receive. That is a deliberate product constraint, not a missing feature.

  • Live prayer. One-to-one audio with a real person, when a prayer partner is available.
  • Voice prayers. Someone records a prayer for you by name. You replay it whenever you need it.
  • Prayer Trains. A request stays covered by a succession of people rather than one.
  • Private spaces. Churches, small groups and campuses get a space where requests stay inside the community.
  • Personal prayer pages. A link you can hand to anyone, so they can pray for you without installing anything.

What it costs

iToro is free to download and free to use on iPhone and Android. The free experience runs on a give-to-receive rhythm: each prayer you give lets you open a request of your own, up to seven at once, and voice prayers you receive are held for seven days. Premium removes those limits and keeps your voice prayers permanently. Prices are set per store and per region; check the App Store or Google Play listing for the current figure in your country.

What a live prayer app is not

This matters more than any feature list. iToro is not therapy, medical care, professional counselling, crisis intervention, or an emergency service. It is prayer, offered by ordinary people, and it does not replace any of those things.

If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number. In the United States, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Please do that first and pray second. Both can be true.

Choosing between the categories

Pick a guided content library if what you want is structure, teaching, and a well-produced daily practice. Pick a prayer list organiser if your problem is remembering and being consistent. Pick a person-to-person app like iToro if what you want is not to be alone in it, and specifically if you want to hear a human voice praying for you by name.

Many people use more than one, and that is a reasonable answer rather than a compromise.

Comparisons

If you are choosing between apps, these go through it honestly, including where the other app is the better answer: iToro vs Hallow, iToro vs Glorify, and iToro vs Echo Prayer and PrayerMate.
